Defining the ideal public space: A perspective from the publicness

The concept of public space can be variously defined and understood from diversified perspectives. However, no matter which definition may used, the most fundamental character is its publicness. This paper reviews definitions dimensions publicness both theoretical empirical perspectives, concludes four synthesized publicness: ownership, accessibility, management, inclusiveness. By clarifying publicness, we unify multiple values functions pertaining to urban space. are further related legal sense lived interpret space, respectively. discriminating their difference, corresponding management inclusiveness, adopted define ideal perspective proposed shows practical significance for planning management.
